ABOUT MARIE VARLEY'S ARTWORK
Marie Varley is an artist and printmaker living and working in Dublin. Marie has been working on this brand new series of work based on vintage matchboxes for the past year and the collection first exhibited at our store in Edinburgh in May of 2015. The matchboxes were commissioned by a Dutch supermarket in the 1950’s and then sold as a collector’s item.
Each matchbox carries beautifully designed minimalist impressions of Airline identities. In the 1950’s, The Golden Age of Flying, when air travel was a luxury rather than a commodity, these matchboxes served as a snapshot into the then glamorous idea of air-travel.
ABOUT SILKSCREEN PRINTING
People are often confused by the term silkscreen print – presuming that it is a digital or machine produced print. A silkscreen print is quite the opposite. It is a complicated time consuming but extremely satisfying way of mark making. Marie chooses to work using this process because she loves the way colour can be applied to paper in huge flat blocks.
